University of Illinois preserving video games

It's interesting to read that the University of Illinois is looking at preserving video games for the future, but taking it a step further and trying to preserve not only the original form, but also the experience itself so it can be replayed without the hardware dependencies:http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2010/06/the-art-of-archiving-virtual-worlds.arsSee More

Sounds good. We periodically spend a few hours in the archive sorting stuff out and adding stuff to our own catalogue. You'd be very welcome to join us next time we do that, if you'd like to meet us and find out a bit more. We don't…

I've definatly and interest in games though as a player as opposed to a programmer or designer. I've been a gaming ever since I was sat on my mother's knee, using my coloured pencils to help map dungeons for Ultima IV and Dungeon…

Yep I've let both John and Tommy know we are coming down and that we would like to speak to them if possible. The joiners have apparently started work on the cabinets so we may be pleasantly surprised when we get there. If we pick things up…

Have you emailed the Hamilton folks to let them know we'll be using their lunch room? :) I'll need to head off by about 2pm on Tuesday.

The Digital Futures event should be unaffected as its not being organised by the same people, I think Chris Halsall (spelling) is co-ordinating that and as far as I know he (or John) will let us know well in advance about whats happening with the…

Fair enough. I don't think it's a massively important one for us anyway, since the School of Media has nothing much to do with games anyway! Having said that, publicity is good. We're not getting many visitors to the website. I seem…

The SVGA (Scottish Video Games Archive).

The SVGA is the initiative of staff and students of the University of the West of Scotland (Paisley Campus). The general idea of the archive is to have a repository of games and hardware; to back up, store and preserve classic, successful or exceptional original games which otherwise might be at risk of being lost or forgotten with time. This will also enable both gaming and non-gaming students to learn from these games by exploring such ideas such as, why they were so successful, what made everyone love a game or even hate it, what made a particular game fail and whether people’s wants, interests and expectations from games has changed over the years and continues to do so. The answers to these questions can be explored with the aid of the SVGA.

Feel free to have a look around the site, get some more information and also check out our sister site - svga.org.uk

Thank You and Enjoy
